Scanning laser systems, whether marking, engraving or drilling micro-holes, rely on galvo mirrors to precisely position the laser beam. Scanning mirrors are lightweight rectangular mirrors for high-speed two-axis laser scanning systems. The size of each mirror has been calculated accordingly to the laser beam size. The specular reflectivity is as high as 99.5% or more. Scanning mirrors are usually mounted on galvanometers for scanning. For two-axis scanning mirrors, the Y mirrors are generally larger in size than the X mirrors. This is because the X mirror is used to scan the Y mirror instead of scanning the object directly. Galvo coatings can achieve greater than 99.9% reflectivity and withstand the most stringent durability requirements - including temperature/humidity and salt spray requirements.
Galvo mirrors are best suited for applications that require flexibility in scan speed, scan geometry, and pixel dwell time. Galvo systems are an excellent choice for high-resolution morphological imaging, embryonic development studies, and microvascular imaging. However, they also provide frame rates high enough for functional imaging.
