Zero order waveplates are constructed of two multiple order waveplates with their axes crossed, thus the effect of the first plate is cancelled by the second, except for the residual difference between them. The two multiple order waveplates can be glued together or optically contact.
Zero order waveplates are much less susceptible to wavelength changes, can be up to 2% above or below the design wavelength with little effect on retardation. The waveplates should be considered for more critical application.
Damage threshold is about 100MW/cm2.

A waveplate, also called a phase retarder, is an optical element that changes the polarization state of light by generating an optical path difference (or phase difference) between two mutually orthogonal polarization components. When the incident light passes through different types of parameter wave plates, the outgoing light is different, and it can be linearly polarized light, elliptically polarized light, circularly polarized light, etc. The main materials of wave plates are birefringent crystals such as quartz, mica, and calcite.
Compound Zero-Order Waveplate, also called compound waveplate, is to glue two multi-order waveplates together, by aligning the fast axis of one waveplate and the slow axis of the other waveplate for use. The full-wave optical path difference is eliminated, and the required optical path difference is left. Gluing the zero-order wave plate can improve the effect of temperature on the wave plate, but it also increases the sensitivity of the retardation of the wave plate to the incident angle and wavelength.
The thickness of the Multiple-Order Waveplate is equal to multiple full-wave thicknesses plus a required retardation thickness. Multistage waveplates are easy to manufacture, but are sensitive to wavelength, temperature, and incident angle.
